Susan Taylor Martin, New President of Thomson Reuters Legal, Wants to Kick-Start Mobile and Cloud Offerings for Lawyers

NEW YORK – February 3, 2014 – In her first interview as president of Thomson Reuters Legal, Susan Taylor Martin told Law Technology News that she plans to help lawyers work faster and better, by speeding up the company’s development of cloud-based and mobile offerings, and improving attorney workflows. A core goal, she said,is to integrate the newly-acquired Practical Law Company into Thomson’s wide range of legal products, to help lawyers jump-start work assignments and quickly train new attorneys.

Taking the helm of the legal division, which accounted for 26 percent of the company’s $12.4 billion revenues in 2012, Taylor Martin broke a glass ceiling at Thomson Reuters. “She is the first woman to lead a Thomson unit whose operating results are reported quarterly,” noted LTN Editor-in-Chief Monica Bay, in LTN‘s February cover story. Bay conducted the wide-ranging interview at the company’s Minnesota campus that houses 7,000 legal employees, one week after Taylor Martin’s New Year’s Day start, and also interviewed eight of her key lieutenants, as well as outside industry analysts and observers.

Other highlights from the new issue include:

  • LTN’s 2013 Innovation Awards, profiling the winners, who showed outstanding achievement in developing and applying legal technology.
  • In “iPad [R]evolution” Alan Cohen interviews six firms to explore how Big Law is adopting tablets and lightweight laptops, and making decisions about what equipment to provide attorneys.
  • “The E-Discovery Year in Review,” LTN’s third annual report reports on the nation’s most important court rulings addressing e-discovery, in 2013.
