Law Technology News Spotlights Motorola Mobility’s In-House Lab for Legal Technology Innovation

NEW YORK – August 1, 2013 – The cover story of the August 2013 issue of ALM’s Law Technology News showcases the in-house law department of Motorola Mobility, a unit of Motorola that was acquired last year by Google.

After the acquisition, 150 of the 250-member Motorola Mobility legal team were either transferred to Google’s corporate headquarters in California or lost their jobs. The others will be moving from Motorola’s former offices in suburban Libertyville, Ill. to Google’s new state-of-the-art regional offices in downtown Chicago’s iconic Merchandise Mart.

“The law department’s leadership took to heart Google’s instruction to use more technology and now operates an in-house development lab – creating custom apps and other technologies to help the company and its clients work faster, smarter and cheaper, with much more transparency,” said Monica Bay, editor-in-chief of LTN. “The result is an innovative in-house lab for legal technology development.”

In her article, “G-Harmony,” Lisa Holton reports that the unit has already developed a number of successful technology projects, including a game app for mobile devices that trains employees on the company’s ethics policies, a predictive coding study that evaluates different e-discovery vendors’ products by using MM’s actual data, and a global barcode-based document indexing system that helps professionals locate legal documents worldwide.

The August 2013 issue of LTN is available online now at www.lawtechnologynews.com.

Other editorial highlights from the latest issue include the following:

  • “A Toast to Collaboration” – lessons learned from a unique collaboration between McDermott Will & Emery and the Department of Justice that sped up the approval of Constellation Brands’ acquisition of the U.S. beer businesses of Corona and related brands from Anheuser-Busch InBev.
  • “Jump Drive” – a case study about Baker & McKenzie’s decision to leapfrog all the way from Office 2003 to Office 2010 — and roll out a range of new templates that have helped to improve productivity for lawyers and support staff.
  • “The Selling Shift” – a provocative guest commentary that tackles the unspoken industry problem of why e-discovery vendors struggle to hire good salespeople.
  • “Drive Time” – a report about the possible paradigm shift underway in which convertible tablets may soon make laptop computers obsolete.
