Keynote Speaker to Advocate Outside Counsel Tech Competency Audits As LegalTech West Coast Opens on May 21

NEW YORK – April 11, 2013 – D. Casey Flaherty, Corporate Counsel of Kia Motors America, will recommend that law departments subject outside counsel to technology competence audits and will detail his own experience with this management tool in a keynote address to open LegalTech West Coast, the largest legal technology event on the West Coast. The annual gathering takes place May 21-22 at The Westin Bonaventure Hotel in downtown Los Angeles.

Mr. Flaherty’s “Raising the Bar on Technological Competence – the Outside Counsel Tech Audit” will discuss his audits of nine large law firms, all of which failed, “some more miserably than others,” and explain how he used these results to manage costs and improve these relationships. Mr. Flaherty will also describe his methodology and current efforts to automate the audit, as well as plans to make it freely available to other in-house counsel.

The following day, May 22, Andrew B. Serwin, chair of the Privacy, Security and Information Management Practice at Foley & Lardner LLP, will outline steps to reduce cybersecurity risk and explain the U.S. Department of Defense’s “Information Superiority” doctrine whereby organizations can structure competitive advantage by getting the right information to the right managers at the right time. He also serves as CEO and Executive Director of The Lares Institute, a Southern California think tank.

LegalTech West Coast 2013 features eight tracks of educational programming. On May 21, multiple sessions will address E-Discovery, Information Governance & Big Data, Litigation Technology, and Advanced IT. The May 22 tracks cover Corporate Law Departments – Security & BYOD, Legal Operations, CIO & CTO, and the California Lawyers’ Track. The California Lawyers’ Track is new to LegalTech West Coast this year and will feature specialized CLE programming for members of the California Bar.

Conference attendees are eligible for up to 12.5 CLE credits, including 2.5 in Ethics, 1.25 in Substance Abuse and 1.25 in Elimination of Bias. For a complete conference agenda, exhibitor list and other details, visit www.legaltechshow.com.
