Bill Carter, CEO of ALM, announces management changes as company accelerates growth strategies on multiple fronts

NEW YORK (August 7, 2012) –ALM, a leading provider of news and business information to the legal and real estate industries, today announced that Kevin Michielsen has been named to the newly created position of chief operating officer of the company.

Michielsen, who joined ALM in 2011 as the senior vice president of the research and information solutions group and ALM’s chief strategy officer, will now be responsible for all ALM national magazines, regional newspapers, as well as research and information solutions.

The announcement was made yesterday by Bill Carter, president and chief executive officer of ALM, as part of a series of organizational changes designed to seize on a number of growth opportunities ALM is pursuing aggressively.

“Kevin’s deep experience on both the strategic and operating sides of the legal information business is a valuable asset to ALM and this new position will allow us to better take advantage of his management skills,” said Carter. “We have some exciting opportunities right now on multiple fronts of the business and Kevin’s new role will help us ensure that we execute successfully in line with those business objectives.”

Michielsen joined ALM in 2011 after spending three years as vice president of strategy and business development at Visant, where he oversaw a number of private equity owned businesses for major institutional investors. He also spent five years at LexisNexis in various roles, including vice president of strategy and operations for the U.S. Legal Markets group. Prior to that, he founded, grew and ultimately sold a successful e-commerce business in Latin America, and spent several years at McKinsey & Co.

In related news, Carter also announced that Aric Press, vice president and editor in chief at ALM, will be taking on additional responsibilities with externally building on ALM’s national reputation for editorial excellence. Press, one of the most widely recognized legal journalists in the U.S., will serve as the senior ambassador of ALM’s award-winning editorial operations to the legal profession, the business community at large and the general public.

As a result of Press’ increased external responsibilities, David Brown, editor in chief of The National Law Journal, has been promoted to vice president and executive editor at ALM. Brown will oversee the day-to-day editorial operations for all of ALM’s national media products and help provide senior editorial leadership for ALM’s national publications.

Yesterday’s organizational announcement also included a variety of internal structural changes in ALM’s marketing, sales, legal and digital operations teams.
