The American Lawyer Announces the Global 200

The American Lawyer publishes its ranking of the world’s 100 largest law firms

New York, NY – September 24, 2018 The American Lawyer has released the first one hundred of the 2018 Global 200 data, providing a detailed look at the top-grossing law firms around the world.

The firms on this year’s list collectively topped $100 billion in revenue for the first time, as the group saw 6.4 percent year-over-year growth. The American Lawyer’s analysis–and the complete rankings based on revenue, headcount and profits per equity partner–will be in the October edition of the magazine. For the first time, the magazine will expand its coverage to the Global 200, with full analysis of the second hundred firms in the November edition.

In addition to appearing in the print issue, the Global 100 charts, articles and analysis can be found online at https://www.law.com/americanlawyer/. The data is available for purchase at https://www.lawcatalog.com/ProductDetail/16934/Global-100.

“The 2018 Global 100 data showed that steady demand is allowing the world’s largest firms to keep on growing. Forty-one of the Global 100 crossed $1 billion in revenue last year,” said Ben Seal, Managing Editor of The American Lawyer. “At the same time, the number of American firms on the list is in decline, giving us a glimpse at the increasingly international future of the industry.”

The Global 200 data is compiled in collaboration with ALM Intelligence for use throughout Legal Compass, as well as analysis for The American Lawyer’s October and November issues. Legal Compass has the ability to complete year-over-year and peer benchmarking on the Global 200 firms across financials, headcount, diversity, and more. The Global 200 data is available in Legal Compass for current subscribers.

“This year’s Global 100 data reinforces, and sheds light on, many of the trends we have seen building over the past decade,” said Nicholas Bruch, Principal Analyst at ALM Intelligence. “The largest firms did extraordinarily well in terms of revenue growth and their improvement in the key financial metrics we look at to gauge their health. Additional key trends that feature prominently in this year’s’ results are firms’ continued expansion into new markets, transatlantic mergers, and the rise of homegrown Asian law firms.”
