ALM’s Corporate Counsel Names “Best Legal Departments” for 2014: 3M, AIG, The Related Group and NetApp

NEW YORK – May 15, 2014 – ALM’s Corporate Counsel, the leading national publication for general counsel and in-house attorneys, today named the four “Best Legal Departments” in corporate America for 2014, profiling the in-house legal departments at 3M, AIG, The Related Group and NetApp.

The four winning departments are profiled in-depth in the June issue of Corporate Counsel and online at www.corpcounsel.com.

“This year’s honorees are a diverse bunch,” said Anthony Paonita, editor-in-chief of Corporate Counsel. “They do creative state-of-the-art work and often confront potentially dangerous crises, from economic meltdowns to bribery scandals, growing stronger as a result.”

The four winning legal departments for this year are:

  • 3M. Faced with legal challenges, 3M’s lawyers find ways to turn them to the company’s advantage. The editors selected 3M for the department’s business acumen, compliance program and litigation prowess.
  • AIG. The AIG lawyers have taken a number of highly publicized body blows in recent years, but they refuse to give up. They were chosen for their collaboration, alternative dispute resolution, process improvements and innovation.
  • The Related Group. “Don’t pick a fight with The Related Group unless you’re in it to win it; the company has racked up an amazing litigation record,” according to the Corporate Counsel profile story. They were selected by the editors for their litigation record and dynamic, go-get-‘em attitude to practicing corporate law.
  • NetApp. NetApp’s lawyers have proven equally adept at changing outside counsel relationships, thwarting patent trolls and serving as a change agent in their industry. They were chosen for their creative problem-solving and extraordinary success fighting patent trolls.
