ALM Promotes Lisa Helem to Editor-in-Chief of The National Law Journal

The National Law Journal Continues to Grow with Talent and Content

New York, NY – August 29, 2017— Lisa Helem has been promoted Editor-in-Chief of ALM’s The National Law Journal publication effective Sept. 1. In her new role, Helem will guide the development of all editorial content for The National Law Journal online and the monthly magazine, including features, special reports and pieces by contributing authors.

“Lisa has been an instrumental asset to our National Law Journal team and has helped shape the publication over the last two years including the transition from the weekly print newspaper to our monthly magazine,” said Molly Miller, Chief Content Officer at ALM. “We are thrilled to have her transition into this role at ALM.”

Helem joined The National Law Journal in December 2015 as the publication’s Assistant Managing Editor and was named Managing Editor in June 2016. As Managing Editor, she has helped to oversee publication of the magazine and has edited features, contributed content and special reports, including the Pro Bono and Appellate hotlists and D.C.’s Rising Stars.

Helem graduated from Duke University in 2001. After college, she wrote for publications including Newsweek, People and the Washington bureau of Cox Newspapers. After receiving her J.D. from the University of Michigan Law School in 2009, Helem practiced law at Vinson & Elkins, before deciding to return to media. Prior to joining ALM, Helem was a Legal Editor at Bloomberg BNA. Helem is a member of the D.C. Bar and of the State Bar of Texas (inactive).

Helem takes the reins at The NLJ following the announced departure of Beth Frerking for a Texas-based publication. Frerking and Helem worked to launch The NLJ magazine back in April and collaborated on various projects during their time together.

“I’m excited about this new role and the road ahead for The National Law Journal. One of my goals is to fully connect with our readership, drawing deeply from the insights of practitioners in our ever-growing profession,” said Lisa Helem, Editor-in-Chief of The National Law Journal. “Strong, incisive journalism from our highly capable ALM team—a team that I’m so proud to be part of—will continue to provide our foundation for the future.”
