The American Lawyer Names Debevoise & Plimpton Litigation Department of the Year

NEW YORK – Jan. 3, 2014 – ALM’s The American Lawyer has named Debevoise & Plimpton as 2014 Litigation Department of the Year. As profiled in the January issue and online at www.americanlawyer.com, “the Debevoise litigators are like the Army Rangers—a small but elite group that works seamlessly and handles the most challenging cases,” racking up two $25
billion results, two major trial defense wins worth $3.5 billion each, and the largest investor-state award in arbitration history during the August 2011 to July 2013 period on which firms were evaluated.

The general litigation finalists were Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld; Covington & Burling; Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher; O’Melveny and Myers; and Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom. In addition, 10 firms received honorable mentions.

Besides this seventh biennial general litigation competition, submissions from Am Law 200 firms, the nation’s largest, in three selected practice groups were also judged by the editorial staffs of The American Lawyer and its sister ALM publication, The Am Law Litigation Daily. Securities and antitrust were the focus this time, along with the traditional intellectual property category. Chosen for awards were:

  • Antitrust. Winner: Simpson Thacher & Bartlett. Finalists: Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher; Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati.
  • Intellectual Property. Winner: Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr. Finalists: Fish & Richardson; Orrick; Herrington & Sutcliffe; Winston & Strawn.
  • Securities. Winner: Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison. Finalists: Cravath, Swaine & Moore; Davis Polk & Wardwell; Sullivan & Cromwell.

In addition, individual awards as Litigators of the Year were given to Juanita Brooks, Miguel Estrada, Robert Giuffra Jr., Roberta Kaplan, George Lombardi and Harold McElhinny.
