Gonzalo de Cesare, Political Advisor with the European
Union Police Mission in Bosnia & Herzegovina,
Delivers Keynote at LegalTech New York 2011

NEW YORK (November 18, 2010)-Gonzalo de Cesare, political advisor with the European Union Police Mission in Bosnia & Herzegovina has been announced as keynote speaker at LegalTech New York 2011. LegalTech New York, the world’s largest and most prestigious legal technology conference and trade show, will take place January 31-February 2, 2011 at the Hilton New York Hotel. Complete conference information is available at www.legaltechshow.com.

Gonzalo de Cesare advises EU Officials as well as civilian and police authorities on a wide array of issues to strengthen democracy, good governance and human rights. The keynote titled, “United Nations War Crimes Investigations – Information Management in High-Volume Legal Proceedings” will give attendees a unique opportunity to hear about the UN’s best practices for managing some of the largest and most complex cases in the world.  De Cesare plans to talk about the conviction of a Khmer Rouge leader for his connection to the deaths of 1.7 million people between 1975 and 1979 in Cambodia.

“I believe the complexity and the intricacy of war crime proceedings make this not only an interesting subject, but also one that has not received the necessary attention,” said de Cesare. “War Crime investigations and court proceedings are document intensive, in a multitude of languages, and with different levels of command responsibility.”

De Cesare will talk to the information management and e-Discovery challenges shared by the Khmer Rouge Trials and the UN International Criminal Tribunals for Rwanda and the former Yugoslavia.  His work has contributed to ensuring the conviction of some of the world’s most notorious war criminals including Kaing Guek Eav (Duch), Slobodan Milosevic, and Jean-Paul Akayesu.

Steve d’Alencon, chief marketing officer at CaseCentral commented, “Mr. Gonzalo de Cesare offers a rare inside perspective on the intersection of United Nations activities and e-Discovery.  His session puts an intensely human face on these topics and will leave an indelible impression on attendees.”

The day two keynote presentation will be held at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, February 1st in the West Grand Ballroom. This session is open to all attendees and has been approved for one complimentary CLE credit.

The National Law Journal Reports Second Straight Year of
Cutbacks at NLJ 250, the Nation’s Top Law Firms

NEW YORK (November 9, 2010)-The National Law Journal today reported the second year of cuts in total employment at the NLJ 250, the nation’s 250 largest law firms. This is only the second time in the 33-year history of the survey that headcount has dropped in two consecutive years. Results and analysis are available at www.nlj.com/nlj250.

The nation’s 250 largest law firms shed more than 1,400 lawyers in 2010.  NLJ 250 firms employed 126,299 lawyers in 2010 compared with 127,701 in 2009, contributing to the biggest two-year decline in the 33-year history of the survey. In fact, it is only the second time that NLJ 250 headcount has dropped in two consecutive years. The first time, during 1992 and 1993, the number of lawyers fell 1 percent and 0.9 percent respectively.  For 2009 and 2010 the drop was 4 percent and 1.1 percent.

“This was one of the weakest years for hiring in the three decades that the NLJ has conducted this survey,” said David Brown, editor in chief of The National Law Journal, “Of the 250 firms on our list, 136 saw a decline in headcount — with many posting double-digit decreases in their attorney ranks.”

Yet again the associate ranks were hardest hit losing nearly 1,000 lawyers. Totals for associate attorneys slumped by 1.5%. The number of associates working at NLJ 250 firms was 60,782.  Partners were less expendable. The number of those attorneys increased again, though barely, this time by 0.6%.

At the top of this year’s list is Baker & McKenzie, with 3,774 attorneys. Baker & McKenzie has held the top spot on the survey for all but one year since the survey’s inception in 1978. The smallest firm on the NLJ 250 this year was Broad and Cassel, with 160 lawyers.

More than half the NLJ 250 declined this year. The firms that saw the biggest percentage declines were Butzel Long, Fish & Richardson, and Howrey. A few firms, however, defied the odds and added significant numbers to their headcount, including: Ropes & Gray; McElroy, Deutsch, Mulvaney & Carpenter; Chadbourne & Parke; Jackson Lewis; and Baker Hostetler.

The NLJ 250 ranking is based on the average number of full-time equivalent attorneys for the calendar year 2010, with a projection to Dec. 31. Firms included had their principal or largest office in the United States, but totals include attorneys in foreign offices.

The complete NLJ 250 database can be purchased at www.almlegalintelligence.com.

The American Lawyer’s November Issue:
Investing in Law Firms, CIO Budgets Edge Upwards
and  Chinese Canadian Acquisitions Boom

NEW YORK (November 1, 2010)-The inaugural issue for Robin Sparkman, the new editor-in-chief at The American Lawyer, announces the results of the latest annual survey of technology directors, conjectures on the future of outside investment in law firms, and takes an in-depth look at the unprecedented boom in Chinese-Canadian energy deals. To access these stories go to http://www.law.com/jsp/tal/index.jsp.

According to Sparkman, “Next year, U.K. law firms will be able to start taking outside investment. That got us musing about what would happen to firms in the U.S. if they could do the same thing.”

In “Capitalism’s Next Frontier,” reporter Amy Kolz stargazes into a time when state bar associations allow outside ownership in law firms.  According to the industry experts interviewed, the future model will be more evolutionary than revolutionary; greater innovation and investment coupled with ruthless accountability and long term planning.  Kolz looks at what external investment could mean to a partnership’s young rainmakers, as well as to their underperforming practices and veteran partners with an eye to retirement.

The annual survey of law firm technology results are reviewed in “A Cloudy Forecast,” by Alan Cohen.  Capital budgets are creeping up but operating budgets remain flat, and CIOs are still focused on cost control. Despite the hype, cloud computing is now getting mixed reviews but collaborative technologies like video conferencing have finally come into their own and are delivering substantial cost savings.

The unprecedented rush of Canadian-Chinese economic knot tying is examined in “Black Gold Rush,” by Julie Triedman.  Chinese state-owned companies have spent a record $32 billion on energy and mining acquisitions and are brimming with enthusiasm for Canada.  The feature takes a look at the major players and examines regulatory issues, the Canadian Pacific oil pipeline and the specific challenges of working with Chinese state-owned companies as clients.

In “The Lanny Davis Show,” reporter D.M. Levine profiles Lanny Davis, ex-attorney for the Honduran coup-supporters and President Obiang of Equatorial Guinea.  After bouncing around multiple law firms Davis has launched Lanny J. Davis and Associates and its sister public relations operation. Davis is the ubiquitous talking head coupled with the metaphorical trigger finger; according to him, “What in God’s name is the reason not to talk to the press when it’s going to be a story anyway?”
