The American Lawyer January Issue:
45 Under 45 Superstar Women in Law

NEW YORK (January 4, 2011)-The American Lawyer’s first issue of 2011 celebrates the success of 45 women lawyers under 45 who have broken into the partnership ranks at AmLaw 200 firms and have already built stellar reputations in their practice areas. See full coverage at The American Lawyer: 45 Under 45.

“Time and again we come across remarkable women lawyers, who fall outside our deals-and-suits coverage.  To give them their due we decided to bring some of them together in a single issue,” says Robin Sparkman, editor-in-chief of The American Lawyer.  “They may not be household names yet but this is not a watch list of future stars - these women have arrived and are thriving.”

“45 Under 45,” introduces this latest segment of top young lawyers. The final list is packed with the women who are leading billion-dollar deals, managing high-stakes litigation and developing successful original practices.  Nominations were whittled down to 45 finalists after interviewing the nominees, their clients and opposing counsel.

Reporter Amy Kolz takes a look at the high performing women in the ranks of M&A and PE lawyers in “Let’s Make a Deal”.   In the table pounding and testosterone charged world of M&A, successful female lawyers are a rarity.  Unpredictable hours, the train wreck of a work/life balance, and the networking hurdles in male dominated boardrooms all make this a particularly hostile environment for women lawyers.

The successful few have adopted a variety of strategies to make it, from developing a reputation for good listening skills and lack of ego, to building client lists early in their careers and networking with other successful women.

“Patently Successful,” by Irene Plagianos, examines the reasons that intellectual property law seems to be an area in which women can excel.   A spike in the numbers of women with technology and science degrees and the increased concentration on IP in law schools have combined to boost the numbers of women in the field.

“If you can understand the technology or science, and break it down for a jury, no one cares if you’re a man or a woman,” according to Ann Cathcart Chaplin of Fish & Richardson.

The American Lawyer’s December Issue: Partner
Reductions, Deequitization, Reduced Class Sizes and
Late Start Dates All Part of “The New Normal”

NEW YORK (December 1, 2010)-The December issue of The American Lawyer reports on this year’s Law Firm Leaders survey, gauging the opinions of leaders at the Am Law 200 firms. Partner reductions and deequitizations are both in the cards for next year, along with reduced class sizes and late start dates. The American Lawyer December issue also explores the seven year Bratz case, reviews the spate of litigation related to shale drilling, and takes a look at which firms took lead roles in the blockbuster bankruptcy cases of the recession. To access these stories go to www.americanlawyer.com.

“Law firms are settling into the new normal—at least until they see a sustained uptick,” stated Robin Sparkman, editor-in-chief of The American Lawyer. “Firms will continue to find ways to adjust their overhead as long as their clients can shop around for their choice of law firm.”

In The New Normal, Claire Zillman reviews the findings from the Law Firm Leaders survey.  The leaders of the 200 top-grossing U.S law firms were asked their opinions on a broad range of topics including associate class sizes, postponed start dates, deequitizations, partner reductions, billing rates and alternative fees.

Although over 70 percent of firm leaders are at least somewhat optimistic about 2011, there are signs that changes implemented during the recession are here to stay for a while.   Almost 70 percent of respondents said that they planned to ask partners to leave their firms in 2011 and nearly a third planned deequitizations. Eighty-seven percent of respondents said that next year’s class sizes would be the same as or smaller than their 2010 class.

“Bratty Behavior,” by senior writer Susan Beck, illustrates how civil litigation between relentless, well-funded litigants can spin out of control.  Now in its seventh year, the Bratz case between MGA Entertainment and Mattel Inc. has preoccupied three federal district court judges, 100 lawyers and has generated 9,000 docket entries. Initially a simple employment dispute with an ex-employee, the Bratz case has warped into a RICO fight with allegations from both sides.

In this month’s Bar Talk, Drilling for Trouble?,” assistant editor Irene Plagianos looks at the rush to Marcellus Shale drilling and the contentious hydraulic fracturing process which extracts natural gas from the shale.  When household water supplies turned brown, and local residents set their sinks alight with the gas coming out of their faucet, litigation was bound to follow.

“Two Years of Rain,” by senior reporter Drew Combs, reports on the companies associated with the major bankruptcy filings during the recent recession. Half of the top ten largest U.S bankruptcies occurred in those two years of downturn; 160 bankruptcies valued at over $100 million and numerous multi-billion dollar behemoths representing big-ticket work for law firms on both sides.
